A starter Guide for League of Legends (Part IV)

In the fourth part of our starters guide, we talk about the different classes of the champions in League of Legends!
March 03, 2023

League of legends has a lot of different champions with unique abilities and powers, and all of them are distributed into one of the champion classes, and in those classes into subclasses. Some of these are mostly played in one role, some of them in several roles. Here are the major classes.

-Tanks(Vanguards, Wardens): This class is really powerful in the current meta (8.24). The main goal of this class is to build lots of health, armor and magic resistance, and basically soak up all the damage from the enemy team while your damage dealers do their job. They usually have good crowd control, high base health and resistance stats, and synergize really well with tank items. Vanguards are basically offensive tanks. They are the front of the team when the battle starts. Wardens are defensive tanks. Their sole job is to protect at all cost.
Roles: Top and Support often, Mid and Jungle sometimes.
Example champions:
Vanguards: Leona, Malphite
Wardens: Shen, Braum

-Figthers(Juggernauts, Divers): These champions can be quite tanky with some really good damage or executing ability. Walking up to the enemy champions and dealing continuous damage or diving under towers are both something their kit allows them to do. Juggernauts are meele champions who march towards the enemy team, trying to beat down anyone who comes close, while divers usually rely on their mobility to kill the target even when he is under his tower.
Roles: Top and Jungle often, Mid sometimes.
Example champions:
Juggernauts: Nasus, Darius
Divers: Xin Zao, Vi

-Slayers (Assasins, Skirmishers): This class can be really scary and powerful if played by experienced hands. their kit usually allows them to make large amounts of damage in a short period of time, making them excellent in killing lowhealth and resostance champions istantly. their weakness is that they are not tanky at all, so they can be blown up very fast aswell. Assasins usually rely on their movement abilities and quick evading powers to jump in on the backline of the enemy team where the damage dealers are, or simply catch an isolated target and instantly kill them. Skirmishers on the other hand are not usually able to one-shot someone, but they can do good amounts of damage while having really good defensive abilities aswell.
Roles: Mid, Jungle often, Top sometimes.
Example champions:
Assasins: Zed, Fizz
Skirmishers: Fiora, Yasuo

-Mages (Burst mages, Battle mages, Artillery mages): Mages are possibly one of the most powerful classes in League of Legends. they can do exceptionally large damages, in a matter of seconds, or from far far away, making them a very unique and challanging class to play. Their damage power has a downside of course: they are usually not very mobile, and really easy to kill. Burst mages can delete someone from the face of the rift with one combo of their abilities, making them very powerful agains single targets and quite useful in teamfights. Battle mages are aimed to go in the middle of the fight, dealing large area damage to all the enemy champions while surviving with their defensive abilities. Artillery mages do damage from afar; they can make huge amounts of damage without even being seen by the enemy team.
Roles: Mid often, Top sometimes
Example champions:
Burst mages: Veigar, Lux
Battle mages: katrhus, Vladimir
Artillery mages: Xerath, Ziggs

-Controllers (Enchanters, Disruptors): Controllers are defensive champions with abilities that can set up an opportunity for teammates to kill enemy champions while protecting them from incoming damage. They usually have some sort of crowd control in their kit, and combining with their defensive and playmaking abilities it makes them an essential part of nearly all games. Enchanters mainly focus on making teammates stronger with shields, heals or power up abilities. Distruptors specialize in stunning and making damage in great areas, while dealing damage aswell, making them excellent in breaking havoc upon the enemy team in teamfights.
Roles: Support often, Mid sometimes
Example champions:
Enchanters: Janna, Lulu
Disruptors: Anivia, Zyra

-Marksmen: Marskmen are usually the carrying force in the late game, becouse at full build they can make huge damage to the enemy team. They make damage over time, usually with their auto attack instead of their abilities. Their job is not only damage dealing: they have to deal damage from a safe distance. If they get too close to the enemy team, and they get killed, you can lose some objectives or even the game itself. They play a key role in almost every game, and their mechanics are different from most of the other classes.
Roles: Bot often, Mid and Top sometimes
Example champions: Ashe, Vayne
